Remulla: Gov. Degamo killing soon to be 'closed case with mastermind identified'
Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla on Wednesday, March 8, expressed optimism that the murder case on the killing of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo will soon be a “closed case” with the mastermind identified.
“There are a few more people that we have to round up for this purpose,” Remulla told journalists.
So far, he said, there have been four persons arrested out of the more than 10 suspects believed involved in the March 4 shooting of Degamo at his home in Pamplona, Negros Oriental.
The shooting also led to the deaths of eight other persons.
Fresh from his travel abroad for the session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Switzerland, Remulla said he has read some of the statements of the suspects.
“Meron na hong isang statement akong nakita na pointing to a mastermind. Walang motive na sinabi pero yung kausap nila was on video (There is a statement pointing to a mastermind. No motive was mentioned but the person they talked to was on video),” he revealed.
He described the video as having “probative value.”
But he declined to provide more details on the identity of the suspected mastermind.
“I cannot point to anybody yet but the fact is meron ng tinuturo na naka-usap sa video (there is someone being pointed to as the person being talked to in the video),” he said.
“We have to evaluate the video properly,” he stressed as he noted that the suspects will be interrogated anew.
“Kukuha lang kami ng lawyers for them to be present when we question them (We will get them lawyers who will be present when we question them),” he said.
