1st heinous crimes prison to rise in Occidental Mindoro – BuCor

Bureau of Corrections

The first prison facility for persons convicted of heinous crimes will be set up in Occidental Mindoro, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Acting Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said.

The Occidental Mindoro facility will be one of the three facilities which will be set up as the government implements Republic Act (RA) No. 11928, the Separate Facility for Heinous Crimes Act, Catapang said.

RA 11928 mandates the setting up of three facilities – one each in Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

Catapang said that Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla has chosen Occidental Mindoro as the site of the first heinous crime facility.

“It will be a brand-new facility. Walang signal, malayo sa tao and they are well guarded (There will be no signal for communication devices, far from people, and the inmates are well guarded),” he said.

He also said the new facility will be a maximum security facility where inmates will not be allowed access to mobile phones and that will be monitored using high-tech equipment.

“It will be well-built para hindi tayo nasisingitan ng mga contraband (so that no contraband will slip in),” he assured.

Under RA 7659, heinous crimes include treason, piracy and mutiny on the high seas in Philippine waters, qualified piracy, qualified bribery, parricide, murder, infanticide, kidnapping and serious illegal detention, robbery with violence against or intimidation of persons, destructive arson, and rape.
