DOJ assures deportation of 4 Japanese fugitives

Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla assured the deportation of four Japanese nationals who are wanted for crimes in their country.

DOJ Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson Jose Dominic F. Clavano IV said the assurance was given by Remulla after meeting with Japanese embassy officials on the cases of 17 Japanese nationals who are in the custody of the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

It was not known immediately why the meeting set for Tuesday, Jan. 31, was held late afternoon on Monday, Jan. 30.

“DOJ Secretary Remulla has given a firm commitment to expedite the process of deportation and has vowed cooperation with the Japanese Embassy and the Japanese government on the matter,” Clavano said.

During the meeting, Clavano recounted that “the Japanese Embassy presented four outstanding arrest warrants which have been pending in Japan for some years now.”

“This is the basis for the request for deportation of the four Japanese nationals from the Philippines to Japan,” he said.

The four Japanese nationals are believed to be members of a syndicate behind a series of robberies in Japan including one that resulted in the death of a 90-year-old woman in Tokyo.

One of those in custody is believed to be Yuki Watanabe, also known as “Luffy,” who is the alleged head of the robbery syndicate.

The BI had earlier issued a briefer which indicated that Watanabe was arrested by the bureau on April 19, 2021 based on a mission order.

Watanabe is the subject of a summary deportation of the BI dated May 28, 2021 for being an illegal entrant and a fugitive from justice since he is the subject of an Interpol blue notice.
