Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said there has been an ongoing investigation on the reported involvement of some Bureau of Immigration (BI) personnel in human trafficking.
“It is already under investigation even before several names came out,” Remulla said on Thursday, Jan. 19.
He disclosed the probe after two immigration officers were ordered relieved by BI Commissioner Norman G. Tansingco who said: “We have received information that the two have links to trafficking syndicates.”
Tansingco also said that the BI has initiated an investigation “to verify this information, and if there is indeed probable cause, we shall file the appropriate case before the DOJ.”
Earlier, Sen. Risa Hontiveros had raised concerns that a number of Filipino trafficking victims ended up working as crypto scammers in Cambodia.
Remulla said “the fact-finding investigation about this human trafficking in Cambodia is ongoing.”
“We have to know how deep it went,” he pointed out.
