CEBU CITY -- At least 13 road accidents are happening each day in this city, data from the city’s traffic office showed.
The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) said road accidents are one of the major causes of traffic congestion in the city.
“I think we have, based on our data, almost 500 accidents during the early months of 2022... and this is roughly 13 accidents per day,” said Paul Gotiong, officer-in-charge of CCTO, during the Cebu City Mobility Summit held on Monday, Sept. 26.
The two-day day summit was all about public transportation and mobility in the city. It was held as part of Mayor Michael Rama’s vision to transform the ‘Queen City of the South’ into a ‘Singapore-like’ city.
Gotiong said that aside from the lack of public transportation and inaccessible sidewalks, the city is also dealing with an increasing number of road accidents.
Overspeeding, disregard of traffic signs, and drunk driving are the top causes of road accidents in the city, Gotiong said.
“Vehicle accidents can also mean P100 billion of opportunities lost,” said Gotiong, referring to a study conducted in 2019 by researchers in Manila.
