The 1,374 unused official printed ballots that were destroyed were supposed to be used in the special elections for the municipalities of Binidayan and Butig, Lanao del Sur.

The said ballots were not used as the special polls in the two Lanao del Sur towns were cancelled.

It was May 23 when the Comelec announced the cancellation of the special elections in Butig and Bindayan after it became apparent that no failure of elections took place in the two towns.

The unused ballots were manually torn into pieces by the Comelec in Intramuros, Manila.

The poll body said the unused ballots need to be destroyed to "prevent its unlawful use."

The Comelec will still schedule the disposal of the said ballots.
