Turning rage into art

TG Villanueva presents his art at ‘Todo Loco’ exhibit in Australia

Is there anything good that happens when people are in rage? We see it all the time, on the streets, in politics, and even in our homes. It always demands violence and hatred, and to put an end to it, revenge, which makes it one of the ultimate mortal sins. While wrath should not be tolerated, that kind of emotion is part of being human and shouldn’t be suppressed. For others, it becomes the ultimate motivation to act on things, make changes, and accomplish something even greater.

That is the story behind the works of multidisciplinary artist TG Villanueva. His latest collage artworks were showcased in Australia through the 2022 exhibit dubbed “Todo Loco (All Crazy),” wherein curator Emma Anna collected works from 44 artists all over the world. TG’s works present images of chaos, reflecting what he felt in the past years.

“You can tell stories with the medium,” TG says about the art of collage. “It can be surreal or absurd, coy or crass, the sky’s the limit. That’s what I love about it. Collage is a very violent, but very versatile art form.”

Growing up as a hormonal, and raging teenager, TG found art as one of the best ways to tell his message and channel his rage into something inspiring. He often explores the darker side of humanity in his works, allowing his canvas to be the mirror of what society is like today.

In his pieces for the “Todo Loco” exhibit, people can expect to see his view on “the bungled response to the pandemic, the mess that was going on in the US, and everything that was wrong with the world at the time, very topical.” While they are rooted in displeasure, his goal is not to take people on to journey full of hostility but to ignite hope and encourage people to take action.

“I am not an artist that you can define or put in a box,” the artist says. “Most of the time, I go where the idea takes me. If the idea calls for a little chaos, then the work will reflect that.”
