Comelec belies rumors of spending barangay elections budget

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday, May 23, belied rumors that the poll body has already used the budget allocated for the conduct of barangay elections.

During a media briefing, Comelec Commissioner George Erwin M. Garcia said the poll body has not even received the budget for the barangay elections.

“Bakit naman bibigyan kami kaagad ng budget (Why would they immediately give us a budget)? You could always verify with DBM (Department of Budget and Management) that the budget for barangay elections of 2022 supposedly by December is still intact. ‘Di pa kami kumuha kahit singko dun (We did not get even a cent),” he said.

The poll commissioner noted that the Comelec is currently in the process of planning the conduct of the upcoming barangay polls.

Also, Garcia said the Comelec will start voter registration for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan or SK by June or July.
