Bike caravans boost Cayetano's pro-environment campaign

As part of the novel "eco-friendly" campaign of senatorial aspirant and former House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, cyclists from all over the archipelago launched simultaneous bike caravans on Sunday morning, April 10.

According to Cayetano's camp, the nationwide caravan was organized and spearheaded by some of the biggest cycling groups across the country with hundreds of members, such as the Universal Cycling Network (UCN) in Cavite, multisports group TriZurKamesa in Pagadian, and Kasabike Iligan in Iligan.

The bike caravans were reportedly held in Quezon City, Manila, Pasay City, Mandaluyong, Santiago in Isabela, Bulacan, Olongapo in Zambales, Imus in Cavite, Calamba in Laguna, Albuquerque and Tagbilaran in Bohol, Pagadian in Zamboanga, Iligan in Lanao del Norte, and Tagum in Davao del Norte.

The simultaneous caravans were akin to the nationwide “1-4-Alan Peter Cayetano Bike Caravan” that was launched last March 14 as a show of support Cayetano’s senate comeback bid. Cayetano's ballot number in the upcoming May 9 polls is 14.

Local officials, including mayors and barangay chairmans, also joined the Sunday bike caravan.

"We just really want to thank Sir Alan Peter Cayetano. From medical assistance, to mobile clinics, sa ambulance, pati sa infrastructure, handang tumulong si Sir Alan," Pagadian City Councilor and Sports Committee Chairman Sam Tyra Co said.

This is the third nationwide bike caravan held in solidarity with Cayetano’s eco-friendly campaign for the May elections.

Cayetano launched his eco-friendly campaign in February, vowing to do away with traditional motorcades to avoid pollution and gas consumption.

He is also not using printed campaign materials such as flyers and posters so as to “not to add to the tons of garbage being generated during election season".

Instead, the Taguig-Pateros 1st district congressman urged his supporters to plant trees and mangroves, establish urban farms, and use social media as alternatives to traditional campaigning.

The call was praised by various environmental groups, such as the EcoWaste Coalition, which said the move reflects Cayetano’s deep concern for the environment and his important mission to make his campaign cleaner, safer, and better until election day.

Cayetano, who has been topping senatorial surveys including the latest survey released by Pulse Asia on April 6, 2022, said he will push for a “faith-based” and “values-oriented” leadership in the Senate.
