Ivan Reitman, director of blockbuster films, died this weekend, Saturday. He was 75.
The Canadian writer-director's passing was confirmed by his family to the media this weekend.
Reitman is known for the 80’s blockbuster film “Ghostbusters.” The 1984 sci-fi film that made stars out of SNL veterans Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. The original film also included Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver among others. The movie also spawned a sequel and a popular cartoon series.
A Czechoslovakian immigrant raised in Canada, Reitman began his film career as a producer for two of David Cronenberg’s early horror films – 1975’s "Shivers" and 1977’s "Rabid" - -before producing National Lampoon’s "Animal House" in 1978.
His other works include iconic 80’s films such as “Meatballs” “Stripes" (both starring Bill Murray) and the 1987 film “Twins” that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.
In the 90’s, Reitman also directed Schwarzenegger’s “Kindergarten Cop” and “Junior.” Reitman also helmed the 1997 film “Six Days, Seven Night” that starred Harrison Ford and Anne Heche. He also produced “Up In The Air” back in 2009 and the biographical drama “Hitchcock” in 2012, as well as being executive producer for comedies such as "Old School” and “Road Trip.”
While Reitman’s cause of death was not available, his children—Jason (who directed the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters “Afterlife”), Catherine and Caroline issued the following statement: “Our family is grieving the unexpected loss of a husband, father, and grandfather who taught us to always seek the magic in life. We take comfort that his work as a filmmaker brought laughter and happiness to countless others around the world. While we mourn privately, we hope those who knew him through his films will remember him always.”
