The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Friday, Dec. 30, issued reminders and guidelines for the safe usage of fireworks and firecrackers this upcoming New Year's Eve celebration.
"When using fireworks and firecrackers: - Use only authorized fireworks and firecracker products.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not use matches, candles, lighters, sparklers, and cigarettes in igniting fireworks and firecrackers. Use mosquito-repellent coils to avoid catching the blast on your hands.
- When the firework or firecracker strand ignites, move away. DO NOT stand over it.
- When a firework or firecracker fails to ignite after lighting it, do not attempt to relight it. Stay away from it as it might suddenly ignite later.
- Wear safety equipment, such as a hard hat, gloves, ear plugs, face mask, and goggles," it said.
The organization then advised that an injured or burned person needs to put the affected area under cold running water and dry it with a clean cloth after.
If available, a topical anesthetic burn spray, aloe vera lotion, or cream can also be applied to moisturize the area.
After that, PRC said that the injured body part needs to be wrapped with clean and soft sheets or gauze if needed.
"If prescribed by a doctor, administer an analgesic, like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Bring victim to a hospital or other medical facility if needed," PRC added.
PRC noted that its emergency medical teams and volunteers may be contacted via Red Cross 143 or (+632) 87902300.
