BuCor starts training 533 newly hired corrections officers before deployment

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) will start training 533 newly hired corrections officers before deployment in its detention facilities nationwide.
Acting BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said that there are 329 female and 204 male new corrections officers.
A total of 289 will be deployed to the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City; 119 to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) in Davao del Norte; 26 to the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan; 22 to the Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) in Abuyog, Leyte; 35 to the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro; and 42 to the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City.
Catapang said that most of those hired were criminology graduates and teachers.
“Kailangan mga teachers din kasi nga sa reformation they can help us teach yung mga inmates or PDL on reformation (We also need teachers because they can teach inmates on reformation),” he explained.
In his message to the new corrections officers during their oath-taking, Catapang said: “Importante yung values yung ma-inculcate sa inyo and then hopefully bago kayo maka-graduate ma-injectionan kayo ng ‘anti-corruption vaccine’ (It’s important that you will inculcate values and then hopefully when you graduate you will get injected with ‘anti-corruption vaccine’).”
“Mangyayari ‘yan kung ma-inculcate ninyo sa values niyo, sa puso, sa damdamin at pag-iisip (This will happen if you will inculcate values in your hearts, your feelings, and your thoughts),” he said.
Meanwhile, Catapang said he met with officials of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and discussed the expansion of the plantilla positions at the BuCor.
“We are discussing with DBM papaano maayos ang aming plantilla (on how we can organize our plantilla positions),” he said as he pointed out that the current ratio of BuCor personnel for every person deprived of liberty (PDL) is at one to 37.
“The ideal is one personnel to seven PDLs,” he stressed.
