BIR steps up drive to force online traders, socmed media influencers to pay taxes

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said it will intensify the search for unregistered online traders and social media influencer who earn huge income through the years but would not pay any tax to the government.

BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui, Jr. has formed special task force (STF) in every regional office and even at the large taxpayers service to run after them.

He said these taxpayers will no longer be investigated, or prosecuted for tax evasion if they voluntarily declare income and pay the appropriate taxes.

"Regardless of the manner of doing business, every taxpayer has the obligations to register, file returns and pay whatever taxes to the government," Lumagui said.

He said the several revenue regulations have already been issued clarifying the taxability of digital transactions.

Lumagui added that a tax guidelines for online sellers is posted in the BIR website at www.bir.gov.ph.

Earlier, many Metro Manila revenue district officers complained of inability to register online merchants based inside condominiums and exclusive subdivisions as security guards do not allow them to enter the premises for security reason.
