MOVIEGOER: 'MMK' to be shown in 41 countries in Africa in 2023

Charo Santos wins best actress at the 5th EDDYs held at the Metropolitan Theater

Like always, she wasn’t an expectant winner, so that when Charo Santos was named best actress at the 5th EDDYs, presented by the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd), she was most surprised.

“I accepted the invitation as presentor for the best film award in support of the entertainment editors, who have been our allies all these years,” the former ABS-CBN president said.

The 5th EDDYs was celebrated at the Metropolitan Theater on Nov. 27.

It was the second best actress win for Charo for her work in the film, Kun Maupay It Panahon.

She earlier nabbed a FAMAS. She thanked her Visayan coach who taught her to deliver her lines in Waray in the film.

The EDDYs win came as a sweet send-off for “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (MMK), which is ending its 31-year run in December.

There’s sadness in Charo’s voice when she talks about the long-running program’s closure. All things must come to an end, she said.

Clutching her first EDDYs trophy, the veteran actress said she hoped to make more films and act in teleseryes. She likes to work with all channels.

On the upside, Charo also announced that a big content distributor has bought "MMK" for showing in 41 countries throughout Africa in 2023.

She’s now dubbing her "MMK" spiels in English. Who knows, she jokes, one day, she might be doing them in Korean?

“MMK” debuted on May 15, 1991 with an episode called “Rubber Shoes,” starring Romnick Sarmenta and Vina Morales. Other significant winners at the latest edition of the EDDYs are:

Christian Bables, best actor ("Big Night"); Mon Confiado, best supporting actor (Arisaka); Lotlot de Leon, best supporting actress ("On The Job: The Missing 8"). “On The Job: The Missing 8," best picture.
