Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla is set to meet with the families of missing “sabungeros” or cockfight enthusiasts on Friday, Dec. 2, to inform them “we are not giving up on anything or anybody.”
Remulla said: “Merong nahanap ang NBI na footage, mga dinukot sa Cavite, (the National Bureau of Investigation has found footage of ‘sabungeros’ who were abducted in Cavite) and hopefully we can find more, we can backtrack.”
News reports published last March indicated that the number of missing “sabungeros” has reached 34.
Last October, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said that 11 police officers and men have been charged by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in connection with the missing “sabungeros” in Cavite.
The PNP said the NBI charged them with kidnapping and serious illegal detention as well as violation of the Anti-Enforced or Involuntary Disappearance Act.
It also said the 11 policemen have also been booted out of their posts.
Remulla said that aside from the PNP, the NBI, on its own, has already filed criminal complaints in the cases of missing “sabungeros.”
“Puro enforcement people ang nafilelan (The respondents named in the complaint are mostly members of law enforcement),” he said.
“We’re contacting the NBI also para yung latest sa investigation at saka CIDG so we can update ano ‘yung latest investigation (We’re contacting both the NBI and the PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to give us updates in the ongoing investigation),” he said.
