Gutter-deep floods cover low-lying areas in Manila as 'Paeng' batters PH


Gutter-deep floods triggered by non-stop rains brought by severe tropical storm "Paeng" hit low-lying areas in Manila on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Members of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) conducted roving operations to determine the areas affected by the storm.

At 1 p.m., the DRRMO identified gutter-level flooding in the following areas: Brgy 698 Bocobo Street, Brgy 776, Brgy 660, Brgy 604, Felix Huertas, Estrada St. Taft, Tayuman Cor. Abad Santos, UN Station, Taft NBI, Pedro Gil, San Andres St. Cor. A. Linao, Pedro Gil Cor. Union, Kalaw, and España M. Dela Fuente.

The local government initiated a "libreng sakay" operation, offering free rides to individuals from Pedro Gil Taft going to Monumento for stranded individuals.

The DRRMO deployed some of their trucks to accommodate the passengers.

Strong winds also uprooted and toppled trees, causing road obstructions at Roxas Boulevard southbound, and at Quirino Avenue by the McArthur Bridge (Northbound).

The DRRMO also responded to clear fallen trees at the Manila North Cemetery, which was temporarily closed to "Undas" visitors.

The Manila Emergency Operations Center (ECO) was placed under "red alert" status due to "Paeng."

The Manila EOC continues to monitor the situation and coordinate with other affiliated departments of the local government.

As of 3:30 p.m. around 58 families or 178 individuals have sought temporary shelter at the Baseco Evacuation Center. Among them were 88 adults and 90 of minor age.

Modular tents have been set up in the center to accommodate the influx of expected evacuees.
