Pinoys in coastal communities alerted vs. moderate risk of storm surges due to 'Paeng'

Tropical storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae) may generate storm surges in selected Philippine coastal areas, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned.

Storm surge, locally known as daluyong ng bagyo, is defined as the “abnormal rise in sea level.” It is caused by strong winds and low atmospheric pressures produced by tropical cyclones.

In its latest bulletin issued at 8 p.m., PAGASA disclosed that the provinces at risk for possible storm surges with estimated heights of 1 to 2 meters include Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes.

“Moderate damage to communities, coastal or marine infrastructures and disruptions to all marine-related activities ,” said the state weather bureau on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Residents living in low-lying communities were advised to stay away from the coast. All marine activities, according to PAGASA, must be cancelled.
