The family members of slain radio commentator Percival Mabasa, better known as Percy Lapid, have been receiving death threats, Roy Mabasa, Percy’s brother, disclosed on Monday, Oct. 24.
Roy, a veteran journalist, revealed this in his Facebook post as the Department of Justice (DOJ) started also on Monday, Oct. 24, the preliminary investigation on the murder complaint filed against four persons reportedly involved in the killing.
This is despite the crazy people who have been sending threats in an effort to weaken our determination to hold accountable those behind the killing of Percy),” he pointed out.
Aside from the threats, Roy said there have been “mga extortionists at mapagsamantala na gusto pang pagkakitaan ang mga namatayan sa kung ano-anong paraan (extortionists and exploiters who want to cash in from the family of the victim).
“Sa gitna ng maraming pagsubok, tuloy lang po ang laban (Amid the trials, we will continue the fight),” Roy assured.
The DOJ held on Monday the preliminary investigation of the murder complaint filed against those reportedly involved in the killing of Percy Lapid.
Present during the preliminary investigation was self-confessed gunman Joel S. Escorial.
The next preliminary investigation will be held on Nov. 4.
Aside from Escorial, those named as respondents were brothers Edmon and Israel Dimaculangan, and a person identified only as “Orly” or “Orlando.”
The preliminary investigation was requested by Escorial through his lawyer.
During the inquest proceedings last Oct. 18, the DOJ said that Escorial “voluntarily re-affirmed his affidavit (Extra Judicial Confession), admitting among others, the killing of Percy Lapid.”
“He acknowledged that on 03 October 2022, at around 8:30 P.M., in Aria Street, Sta. Ceclia Village, Brgy. Talon Dos, Las Pinas City, he shot Percy Lapid three (3) times uising a caliber .45 pistol, and that he was accompanied by Israel Adao Dimaculangan, Edom Adao Dimaculangan and a certain alias Orly/Orlando,” the DOJ said.
