'Competition works': Cayetano pitches for Marcos Park, Ninoy Aquino Park in NAIA
Amid calls to rename the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has another suggestion: build a park at the airport, split it into two, and name each side after the late former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and the late former senator Ninoy Aquino.

“One of the proposals during the Duterte administration is if matuloy yung Bulacan and Cavite airport, gawin ng park kahit kalahati ng NAIA at ito magiging lungs o central park ng Pilipinas (if the Bulacan and Cavite Airport pushed through, turn half of NAIA into a park and this will be the lungs or central park of the Philippines),” Cayetano said during the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Senate budget hearing on Thursday, Oct. 13.
He then suggested that half of this lot be converted into a commercial district for business owners, and that this be divided based on the users' political preference.
“Actually ako, my amended proposal dun. Yung kalahati gawing park, yung kalahati hatiin sa dalawa. Yung una gawing ‘Ferdinand Marcos Sr. Business Park,’ yung kalahati gawin ‘Ninoy Aquino Business Park’ (I have an amended proposal for this. Turn half into a park, and split the second half into two. The first can be named ‘Ferdinand Marcos Sr. Business Park,’ the second half can be named ‘Ninoy Aquino Business Park’),” he said.
NAIA was originally named Manila International Airport (MIA). However, Senator Aquino was assassinated at MIA after he returned from exile on Aug. 21, 1983. In 1987, the airport was renamed NAIA during the administration late President Corazon Aquino, the widow of Ninoy Aquino.
“Para mag-compete yung negosyante (So that business owners can compete) rather than boycott boycott,” Cayetano joked.
“Tignan natin kung saan sila pupunta dun sa dalawa (Let’s see where businesses go between the two). Competition works. Kaso sa nag-aaway sa Internet kung ire-rename o hindi, pareho naman silang naging part of our history so (Instead of fighting over the internet if NAIA should be renamed, anyway, both are part of our history),” he explained.
“Double bashing to mamaya (I will get double the bashing later), both sides,” he joked, referring to the heated political divide between Marcos and Aquino followers in the country.
Meanwhile, there have been several attempts to rename the NAIA.
Some people want it to be named after Marcos Sr., while some want it reverted to MIA. The incumbent administration of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has stated that the renaming of NAIA wasn't a priority.
