CEBU CITY -- Police here welcomed the signing into law of a measure seeking the registration of Subscriber Identity Module or sim card.
Col. Ireneo Dalogdog, chief of the Cebu City Police Office, said the SIM Registration Act or Republic Act 11934, will somehow unburden the police.
“We are very thankful for that,” said Dalogdog on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
“That will lessen our work because that law will be a big help for the police and other law enforcement agencies,” he added.
Under the law, the sale and the use of SIM cards will be regulated through mandating registration to end-users.
The measure was signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday, Oct. 10.
Dalogdog said he believes that the law will help curb crimes or scams committed through text messages.
Dalogdog, a former chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Central Visayas, added that the law is badly needed due to the limited capability of law enforcers to identify persons involved in illegal activities committed through text messages.
Dalogdog said there had been several instances that the city was rocked by bomb scares through text messages and the persons behind the hoax could not be identified.
“If there are hoax bomb threats, we don’t have the capability to locate the texter. That’s why this law will be a big help for us,” said Dalogodg.
“This law will be helpful for us and the general public. This will put to end a lot of illegal activities with the use of SIM cards,” stressed Dalogdog.
