Lawyers' group calls for De Lima's release on bail after hostage-taking

Human rights lawyers on Monday, Oct. 10, said detained former Senator Leila M. De Lima should be allowed to post bail after she became a victim of hostage-taking incident at the detention facility of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Quezon City last Sunday, Oct. 9.
The Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) said: “Senator De Lima should be released on bail immediately. She is not a flight risk and given the state of the evidence, there is every reason to grant her provisional liberty.”
De Lima has been detained at the PNP’s Custodial Center since 2017 on non-bailable illegal drugs charges filed against her before the Muntinlupa City regional trial court (RTC).
The charges claimed that De Lima was involved in the alleged proliferation of illegal drugs trading at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City when she was the secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ).
She was held hostage last Sunday morning by one of three prisoners who attempted to escape from the PNP’s Custodial Center. The PNP had said that De Lima is safe.
In his Facebook post, Diokno said he visited De Lima last Sunday afternoon.
“When she recounted her experience to me, I could tell that she was visibly shaken,” Diokno recounted.
“It was totally unexpected, unnerving, and very harrowing,” he added.
He said that De Lima told him that the detainee “manhandled her, choked her, and poked hard on her breast a home-made knife.”
“He appeared ready to die and to kill me as well,” Diokno also said quoting De Lima.
