Thirty-five persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were freed from the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) last Sept. 25, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
BuCor said the immediate release of the qualified PDLs was part of the bureau’s efforts to decongest jail facilities and to prevent disease infections among inmates like the Covid virus.
It reiterated that more PDLs are expected to be released based on the directive of BuCor Director General Gerald Q. Bantag to expedite the verification of the prison records of inmates, including their credits under the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law.
Credits under GCTA shorten the prison term of a PDL.
For the 35 freed PDLs, the culminating activity was held for them and was led by DPPF Regional Superintendent CTSSupt. Albert C. Manalo, Deputy Superintendent for Administration CTSupt. Edgar F. Angeles, Deputy Superintendent for Security CCInsp. Mark P. Comedes, and Deputy Superintendent for Reformation CCInsp. Divina S. Camina.
“The freed PDLs were handed their certificate of discharge, grooming kit and transportation allowance,” BuCor said.
Last Sept. 13, during the birthday of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., 45 PDLs were released from DPPF, it also said.
