Karding’s agricultural damage now at P3.12B—DA


The damage caused by Super Typhoon Karding has now reached P3.12 billion, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said in its latest advisory released on Monday, Oct. 3.

Based on the DA’s Bulletin No. 9, the areas covered in the estimate are Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, and Western Visayas.

Around 170,762 hectares of farmlands have been hit by the super typhoon, the agency noted.

The DA said 108,594 farmers and fisherfolk have been affected by the devastation of Karding.

Commodities affected, according to the agriculture department, include rice, corn, cassava, abaca, high-value crops, livestock and poultry, and fisheries.

“Damage has also been incurred in agricultural infrastructures, machineries and equipment,” it added.

Based on the DA’s data, damage and losses in rice amounted to P2.05B with affected area at 163,162 hectares and the volume of production loss at 134,205 metric tons.

“hat represents 0.66 percent of the annual total production target volume for rice, which is 20.25 million metric tons,” the agriculture department noted.

On the other hand, the DA said the damage and losses for corn were P65.4 million with an affected area of 2,003 hectares and a volume of production loss of 2,635 metric tons.

The DA said the figure corresponds to 0.05 percent of the yearly goal volume for corn production, which is 5.11 million metric tons.
