No decision yet for ineligible player Gamboa, clarifies NCAA

The NCAA has clarified that there has been no decision yet as to what penalty would be imposed on ineligible player Gab Gamboa, who suited up in Mapua's opening win against San Beda last Sept. 10.

NCAA statement

The league, in an official statement signed by Season 98 Chairman Estefanio Boquiron Jr., and Vice Chairman Efren Jose Supan, shed light on the issue contrary to reports that Gamboa is set to face a lifetime ban in the NCAA.

"To reiterate, the NCAA decision was that Mr. Gamboa was ineligible to play because he was also enrolled in another school when he played. Thus, consistent with NCAA Rules, MU (Mapua) forfeited its game in favor of San Beda University (SBU) last 10 September 2022," the statement read.

"Further, with regard to the effect on eligibility, we maintain that the NCAA Basketball Commissioner merely interpreted the matter in accordance with the NCAA Rule Book."

The league also maintained its stand that a sanction has yet to be imposed on Gamboa.

It would be recalled that NCAA commissioner Tonichi Pujante in a press conference Saturday, Oct. 1, said Gamboa, who was reportedly enrolled in St. Clare College of Caloocan, would be "banned for life."

The recent development proved costly for the embattled Cardinals, who fell to a 0-7 hole following a 64-59 loss against the Arellano Chiefs Sunday, Oct. 2.
