NCAA forfeits Mapua's opening win vs San Beda, slaps ineligible player with lifetime ban

A series of development in the NCAA transpired Saturday, Oct. 1, beginning with the Management Committee (MANCOM) forfeiting Mapua's opening win against San Beda last Sept. 10.

This as the Cardinals, who were deemed winless now in six games, have fielded an ineligible player in Gab Gamboa, paving the way for the Red Lions to claim a 4-1 record.

The MANCOM and commissioner Tonichi Pujante have also slapped a lifetime ban on Gamboa, who was reportedly enrolled in another school namely St. Clare College of Caloocan.

"The ManCom, after investigation, found out that Mapua University (MU) player Mr. Gabriel Dan Gamboa, who played last 10 September against San Beda University (SBU) where MU won, was ineligible to play," a statement read as reported and cited by GMA News Online.

"In view thereof, as a penalty, for such a violation, MU forfeits its game against SBU. SBU, therefore, won that game."

Meanwhile, Letran stalwarts Louie Sangalang and Brent Paraiso won't still see action against Lyceum at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, as their respective suspensions were upgraded to two games.

The upgrade was in effect after further review by Pujante when Sangalang was seen cursing and raising a middle finger toward an official when he was thrown out of the game in the Knights' 67-62 win against the Mapua Cardinals last Sept. 27.

Paraiso's case, on the other hand, was elevated due to his further comments regarding the officiating in the said game.
