John Mayer recently tested positive for COVID-19 just as he was setting out to leave for the upcoming Dead and Company shows in Cancun, Mexico.
Mayer “will no longer appear during the Dead and Company’s ‘Playing in the Sands concerts in Mexico, which takes place at Moon Palace resort in Cancun January 7 to January 10, and January 13 through January 16,” Rolling Stone Reported.
Dead and Company posted on its official Instagram, “Today, just prior to leaving for Mexico, per his physician, @JohnMayer tested positive for COVID-19 and will be unable to perform at the upcoming ‘Playing in the Sand’ event in Riviera Cancun.”
“We came down here to have fun. Unfortunately, some of our brothers cannot make it but fun is what we’re going to have--Bobby Weir,” the post added.
John Mayer has been a regular fixture at the band for several years now. Prior to Mayer’s diagnosis, drummer Bill Kreutzmann also announced that he won't be joining the show due to health concerns.

Dead and Company features some of the original members of the classic jam band the Grateful Dead. The former includes singer-guitarist Bob Weir, and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. Regulars on the band include Mayer and former Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge, and a host of guest musicians.
Not 24 hours have passed since announcing John Mayer’s Covid diagnosis, and bowing to pressures of surging Covid-19 cases in the US and other areas, Dead & Company announced on its Instagram that the entire shows have now been canceled by the show organizer CID Presents.
“With much sadness and after great consideration of every possible scenario, ‘Playing in the Sand’ shows in Riviera Cancun have now been canceled,” it said on the band’s Instagram.
“Dead and Company and CID Presents tried everything possible to bring normalcy and deliver a great experience and amazing music. But each day it became increasingly clear that canceling is the correct thing to do for the fans and for our crew...See you soon, hug your loved ones, stay safe and be kind.”
