Huawei calls all students and mobile app developers to this year's Apps UP Contest

Huawei’s global app innovation contest, Apps UP, is now open to all students, mobile app developers, hobbyists, professionals with an existing app or with ideas to develop a new app. Apps UP is a global event by Huawei that brings together developer talents from all over the world to create an app ecosystem that intelligently connects everything. It aims to inspire developers to innovate, bring people, devices, and scenarios together, and create elevated app experiences for users. The deadline for app submissions is on October 9, 2022.

HMS Core, which is based on Huawei devices and the Android platform, is a mobile service framework that provides app developers with a variety of service capabilities. It offers basic services to Huawei end users such as HUAWEI ID, payments, and notifications. It provides tools and services for third-party developers to create their own apps.

In June 2022, the total number of registered Huawei developers reached 5.75 million. More than 216,000 applications have been integrated with HMS Core globally since June 2022. HMS Core continues to develop multi-terminal, cross-OS, and full-scene innovative and open capabilities while providing solutions to multiple industries.

Joining Apps UP has many advantages that participants will appreciate. Apps UP can help developers expedite the launch of their  app and bring them to the market sooner as developers can receive technical support as well as enhance features on their apps with HMS Core kits. Publishing one’s app on HUAWEI AppGallery will also give developers a platform to reach out to 730 million monthly active Huawei device users.

Signing up with your HUAWEI ID is all that is required to participate. Developers may participate individually or as part of a team of no more than four members. Submitted works must include at least one HMS open capability or service and must run smoothly on devices that have HMS installed. The evaluation process will include a review by judges who are industry leaders, and followed by a public vote. In December 2022, the winners of 9 award categories will be announced.

Developers can submit their entries by 18:00 on 9 October 2022 (UTC +8).

Team Alpha, which consists of two members, Supuni D. Jayasinghe and Krishalika Dilani, is Apps UP 2021 winner of the “Best HMS Core Innovation Award”. Their app, Land of Calm, is a well-being app that helps users keep track of their sleep and mental well-being, with features such as an anxiety log analysis and calm audio playlist and stories.

"Apps UP was our first experience competing in a mobile app development competition and developing a mobile app. We encountered some technical challenges during the process but these were quickly resolved as we received support from the Apps UP technical team who worked tirelessly to resolve our concerns. We were also able to refer to HMS integration documents and get advice from the HUAWEI Developer Forum.

Team Alpha was able to deliver better experiences for its users through features that were unlocked with HMS Core kits. "After considering the requirements to develop app features, we chose to integrate the account kit for authorisation, HUAWEI Cloud storage for data storage, audio kit for playlists, ML kit text-to-speech for reading stories, and in-app messaging feature to remind and motivate users on the sleep routine challenge. These kits provide a unique experience to our app users," shared Team Alpha.

"Even though Land of Calm is our first mobile application, Apps UP has helped us level up in our technical knowledge and we have gained valuable experience. Our app has also received global exposure all thanks to the contest, exposure which we would not have received if we had launched our app on our own,” shared Team Alpha.
