ILOILO CITY – More than 100 hungry inmates staged a noise barrage Wednesday, Aug. 24, atop the roof of the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) in Pototan, Iloilo to demand enough food and the relief of the jail warden.
“Gutom kami! (We’re hungry!)” read a signboard of the prisoners.
The protesters claimed that they do not have sufficient food to eat and that they were only given one meal per day.
The IDJ, which houses around 100 inmates from all over Iloilo, is under the management of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Region 6.
Atty. Jairus Dogelio, BJMP-Region 6 spokesperson, said they are investigating the incident and the allegations of the prisoners.
Dogelio expressed doubt over the allegations of the prisoners as BJMP has a daily budget for three meals per day.
The prisoners were successful in their call to remove jail warden Jail Senior Insp. Norberto Miciano Jr.
Dogelio said Miciano was relieved pending investigation.
