The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has sought the assistance of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in providing legal counseling for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
In a statement, BuCor said its Directorate for External Relations (DER) has met with Pasay-Parañaque-Las Piñas-Muntinlupa (IBP-PPLM) Chapter President Danny L. Gapasin Jr.
“The Bureau, under the leadership of the Director General Gerald Q. Bantag, continues to build stronger linkages with other agencies, in accordance with the lawful mandates of BuCor, to help our PDLs have a better life upon release,” it said.
During the meeting, it said that DER representatives discussed “the implementation of the Pre and Post Release Programs for soon-to-be-released PDLs.”
At the same time, it said it also proposed to IBP-PPLM “to provide paralegal counseling to our clientele with the supervision of DER and in coordination with the Inmates Documents Processing Division (IDPD) of BuCor.”
“Atty. Gapasin assured that he will endorse these plans to the Board of IBP-PPLM Chapter especially the possibility of Memorandum of Agreement,” it said.
“The signing of the agreement may be scheduled during the celebration of the Law Month this September if both parties will eventually agree to the draft MOA,” it added.
