Japanese camera brand Nikon said that they will cease the development and production of new single-lens reflex (SLR) camera units due to the popularity of smartphones and mirrorless cameras, as reported by global news publisher Nikkei Asia.
The same report mentioned that Nikon will continue producing and selling existing SLR models while shifting its focus on the development of mirrorless camera units with interchangeable lenses.
Since the arrival of new smartphone devices equipped with advanced imaging capabilities, the sales of Nikon SLR cameras (all types and models) have been declining. The consumer demand for SLR camera units has been dwindling as more people prefer image capture devices that are compact and lightweight like mirrorless cameras.
Established in 1959, Nikon used to hold the larger market share in analog and digital cameras versus its rival Canon.
