IBP condemns killing of Filipino lawyer in US

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) has urged United States government to ensure that justice is served against those responsible for the killing of Filipino lawyer John Albert “Jal” Laylo in Philadelphia.

In a statement, the IBP said “we strongly condemn this senseless act and hope that the US authorities are able to serve Atty. Laylo and provide the family he left behind justice and peace of mind by apprehending the perpetrators at the soonest possible time.”

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones he left and we wish them courage and peace as they go through this most difficult time,” it said.

The slain lawyer, who is believed to have been a victim of a random shooting, is the former legislative staff of detained Sen. Leila M. De Lima who had expressed her condolences.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney was reported to have offered a $20,000 reward for any information that will lead to the arrest of those behind the killing of Laylo.

“The Consulate was told a $20,000 reward is being offered for information that would lead to the arrest of the shooter. The Consulate later met with to tell her about the outcome of the discussions with Mayor Kenney,” Philippine Consul General Elmer Cato was quoted in published news reports.

Reports stated that Laylo was in Philadelphia to visit relatives when he was shot last June 19 while on his way to the airport to catch a flight to Chicago.

The lawyer was with his mother, Leah Bustamante Laylo, when assailants fired at the Uber car they were riding. The mother sustained minor wounds.

He was rushed to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he passed away.
