The owner and crew members of the Filipino fishing vessel F/B Gem-Ver have received the P6 million compensation for the 2019 sinking of the vessel at the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Justice Undersecretary Adrian Ferdinand S. Sugay said: “Full compensation has already been made in favor of the vessel owner and the fishermen. Payment was received on 16 May 2022.”

Sugay said the payment was tendered by the owners of the Chinese trawler Yuemaobinyu 42212.

Gem-Ver sank on June 9, 2019 after getting rammed by a Chinese trawler in Reed Bank, also known as the Recto Bank, in the West Philippine Sea.

The Chinese trawler fled which left the crew members of Gem-Ver stranded until they were rescued and returned to Philippine shores.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) represented the owners and crew of F/B Gem-Ver in seeking compensation.
