Pangarungan touts achievements of May 9 polls


Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan has enumerated some of the achievements of the May 9 National and Local polls.

One of the achievements mentioned by the poll chief was the high voter turnout.

"I am proud to say that the Commission on Elections has successfully defended the sovereign right of the people to the democratic process of elections," Pangarungan said in his speech during the proclamation of the 12 winning senators on Wednesday, May 18 at the Philippine International Convention Center Forum Tent in Pasay City.

"The glory does not belong solely to the winners of the elections. It also belongs to the voters who stood patiently in line to cast their votes in an election with one of the highest voter turnouts in recent history," he added.

Pangarungan said this elections also had the lowest election-related violence of only 16 incidents compared to around one hundred and 160 violent incidents in the 2019 polls.

The poll chief also cited the very efficient and flawless Transparency Server that received all election results in record time immediately after voting on election day.

"The swiftest transmission was witnessed by the watchful eyes of all representatives of political parties, the PPCRV, NAMFREL and other citizens’ arms," said Pangarungan.

As to the reports of VCM errors and other glitches in this election, he said, the Commission en banc shall continually improve on the election process.

Pangarungan then thanked all those who helped ensure an orderly and successful election such as those from the Commission, the teachers, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, and the Philippine Coast Guard, among others.
