Spend the day the sweetest way with mom with these confections at S Maison

There is a saying by Tenneva Jordan that goes: “A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.” Our moms may just be the sweetest, most selfless person in our lives. At the very least, this Mother’s Day, we should treat them like queens and take them on an unforgettable date they deserve.

An idea on how to make today more special is by spending quality time with mom at S Maison. Treat her like the Duchess of Bedford over afternoon tea, or maybe like Marie Antoinette over the most sublime cakes in the metro while watching the breathtaking Manila Bay sunset.

If there aren’t enough pies to go around, here are other suggestions, from Filipino staples to several kinds of cheesecakes and other whipped creamed and fresh fruit baked goodies, all of which can be conveniently found at the luxury mall.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf has this buttery confection called the Pineapple Upside Down Cake. It’s topped with caramelized pineapple slices that go well with any of the café’s brews.

*****

Honey Crunch Cake

Take pleasure in every bite with Nono’s light sponge cake coated with rich, freshly whipped cream, and topped with crunchy shards of honey.

*****

Lola’s Cakes

When it comes to food, grandma knows best. Lola’s Café has an array of modern Filipino cakes that would bring anyone to a sweet high. There’s the Kesong Puti Cheesecake that’s topped with latik, caramelized coconut cream, and bukayo; the Ube Quezo de Bola Cheesecake, graham crusted with a smooth and rich purple yam filling topped with light cream, finished with a generous sprinkle of grated queso de bola; the Mango Cheesecake, made with fresh ripe mangoes blended with a cheesecake base topped with streusels; and Auro Tsokolate Cake, luscious and moist cake filled with thick caramel and crunchy cookie bits, generously coated in Auro chocolate ganache.

Halo-halo Cake

Here’s a cake by UCC they describe as “a Filipino classic with a twist that warms the hearts of many with glowing pride and nostalgia!”

The purple yam takes the form of a chiffon cake and icing, with leche flan, caramelized banana, and other halo-halo ingredients in between. With the complete rekados (ingredients), save for the gulaman, sago, and nata de coco, this unique dessert comes with a FIC nangkasuy ice cream topped with corn flakes.

*****

Cherry Blossom Cake and Mango Passion Cheesecake

Patrons of Starbucks may opt for the Cherry Blossom Cake, a delicious and moist, sweet cherry cake layered with creamy, crushed cherry filling, finished with cherry cream. Another recommendation is the Mango Passion Cheesecake, a dreamy cheesecake that carries the vibrant flavors of mango and passion fruit.

*****

OD cookies

Fresh baked cookies with a rich blend of three couverture-grade chocolates and indulgent French butter would also do the trick for a fantastic Mother’s Day surprise. Not only would you be treating your mom to good food, but you’d also be helping out handicapped people, in particular deaf individuals hired by the “not so OD-nary bakeshop.”

*****

Torrija

BCN Las Flores has a tantalizing Torrija, Spanish-style French toast with brioche bread, Kahlua caramel, and salted caramel ice cream that would have mom exclaim “Te amo hijo or Amo a tu hija (I love you son/daughter)!”

*****

Tarta de Chocolate

Barcino’s new dessert, a chocolate gateau, is a cake flavored with melted choco. Pair it with wine and toast to your mother.

*****

Tiramisu alla ‘Rossini’ and Cannoli Siciliani

If mom is a fan of Italian cuisine, best bring her to Rossini Ristorante Italiano, an Italian fine dining restaurant with a Mediterranean twist. The desserts to try are the Tiramisu, Italian ladyfingers soaked in espresso and Amaretto, layered with homemade Mascarpone cream; and Cannoli Siciliani, an open “Sicilian” crispy cocoa cone filled with sweetened ricotta cheese.

*****

New York Cheesecake

Italianni’s may be an Italian restaurant, but one of its bestsellers is the New York Cheesecake, served on a bed of strawberry amaretto sauce. The mouthwatering cheesecake is well-received for having the right amount of sweetness and sourness.

*****

Turon de leche

Locavore’s turon de leche is the Filipino fried banana spring roll but with a dulce de leche stuffing.

*****

Mga Dulce

Timeless Pinoy food at XO 46 Heritage Bistro is also a good choice. “Mga Dulce (sweets)” are a series of bites inspired by various Filipino desserts. There’s the Sapin Sapin Bahaghari, layered glutinous rice; Champorado Eh, sweet chocolate rice porridge; Mango Con Broas Mabuhay, a mango cream cake made of ladyfingers; Mala Ubeng Pinipig, a three-layered kalamay-like purple yam dessert; Cassava Cake at Pinaalat na Caramel, Filipino moist cake made of grated cassava, coconut milk, and condensed milk with a custard caramel layer on top; and Bico Ube a chewy purple yam kakanin with latik topping. All of these are served with Mantecado ice cream.
