LOOK: There’s a new Japanese food spot in Tagaytay

Cafe Yama brings a taste of Japan to Tagaytay

If you ask Filipinos about their dream travel destinations, Japan will definitely be on that list. Mangas have inspired numerous local artists, the country’s beautiful sceneries and culture continue to delight us, and dishes like ramen, tempura, and sushi have become part of our dining scene for the longest time. As Manila Bulletin Lifestyle food columnist Sol Vanzi said, “Japan lost the war but its food has succeeded in invading the world.” Going there in our current climate can be challenging. But if you’ve been longing to feel that Japanese experience, there is a new food spot in Tagaytay that is serving just that and more.

Launched in the early months of 2022, Cafe Yama, led by Filipino billionaire businessman Manny Villar, is on a mission to bring the best of Japanese cuisine to Tagaytay’s food scene.

“We're giving you a fresh take on Japanese cuisine with Cafe Yama, our newly-opened restaurant located in Lausanne at Crosswinds, Tagaytay,” Villar said in a post. “Come have a taste of your delicious Japanese favorites while enjoying the beauty of nature!”

Much like what you’re going to see in The Land of the Rising Sun, the food spot embodies the Shokudo style with its warm wooden setup decorated with Wagasa (Japanese umbrellas). On the menu is a myriad of Japanese dishes, from savory donburi, comforting noodle bowls, and fresh sushis to sweet potato and matcha green tea cakes for dessert. What is Tagaytay dining experience without a view? People can enjoy their meal al fresco style while savoring Tagaytay’s evergreen view. And at night, the place comes alive with the glow coming from Japanese lanterns.

According to its Instagram account, Cafe Yama is open from 10 am to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and until 10 p.m. during weekends and holidays. Currently, it doesn’t accept reservations, and, of course, presenting your vaccination card is needed to enter its space.
