Lawyer Jay C. De Castro is the new deputy director general of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
De Castro took over the post from then Deputy Director General Melvin Buenafe who resigned in 2019.
He took his oath of office before Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra last Wednesday, March 9.
“I understand he will be responsible for reformation activities as deputy director general at the BuCor. Atty. Jay De Castro is a whiff of fresh air in BuCor,” Guevarra said.
“He was in private law practice for a long time, specializing in labor-management cases,” he said.
Guevarra recalled that he and Executive Secretary Salvador C. Medialdea worked together with de Castro under the Pecabar law firm that was founded by former Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile.
He also said that De Castro also writes a column in a tabloid.
“He was a passionate anti-crime crusader, especially focusing on illegal drugs,” he added.
