GCash blocks fake account posing as PH Red Cross official

Mobile wallet application GCash has warned against a fake Facebook account bearing the name of an official of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) reportedly used to solicit donations from the public through the app.

In a statement on Thursday, Aug. 5, GCash said it has already blocked the said e-wallet account.

“It has come to GCash’s attention that a fake Facebook account bearing the name of Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Elizabeth Zavalla has been soliciting donations from the public through GCash,” it said.

GCash said it has reached out to Zavalla to address the issue, and expressed their willingness to join the official in taking possible legal action against the perpetrator.

Moreover, the statement noted that GCash is cooperating with the authorities to investigate and track down those behind this scam.

“GCash assures the public that it will not hesitate to use the full.extent of the law against unscrupulous individuals using the e-wallet,” it said.

“GCash also reminds the public that it will not hesitate to take legal action to the full extent of the law against individuals using the e-wallet platform for illegal purposes and activities,” it added.

The PRC had warned the public against fake social media and mobile wallet accounts posing as Zavalla that are reportedly used for fraudulent transactions.

“We are reminding everyone transacting with the PRC to transact only through our official channels,” Zavalla said in a statement.

“We will take necessary legal actions against anyone involved in these fraudulent transactions,” she added.
