Death toll in Marikina City Jail escape try rises to 3

The death toll in a botched escape plan of inmates at the Marikina City Jail has increased to three after a jail guard succumbed to serious body injuries, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said Friday, Aug. 27.

Major Xavier Solda, BJMP spokesperson, said two Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) were shot dead by responding jail guards when they attempted to escape from the detention facility on Thursday.

The incident started when the two inmates, whose names were withheld by the authorities, managed to grab a gun from one of the two on-duty jail guards. The jail guards, both female, were then held hostage by the inmates.

Colleagues of the jail guards responded shortly which resulted to a shootout and the death of the two inmates and a lady jail guard, Solda said.

Two more BJMP personnel were also wounded in the gunbattle.

"As to the names (of fatalities) hindi pa ako nakareceive ng clearance at ipauna muna ang mga pamilya ng mga namatay (As to the names, I have not received clearance to release yet so we will first inform the families of the casualties),’’ Solda said.

He noted that the injured BJMP personnel were already in stable condition and are still receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

Meanwhile, the fate of Supt. Ma. Teresa Uy, Marikina City Jail warden, will also be decided by the BJMP as the probe progresses.

All Metro Manila jail facilities were also placed under a Red Alert status due to the incident while additional jail personnel were deployed to Marikina City Jail to enhance the security, the BJMP spokesperson added.
