While its appearance may not be appetizing to other diners, balut is without a doubt among the iconic dishes of the Philippines. What made it known to many is its accessibility to Filipinos as it is being sold on the streets.

Made of duck's egg with a 16- to 21-day-old embryo inside, balut is definitely a food not just for consuming, but something to experience. Luckily, there are now many ways to enjoy it, from being coated with batter and deep-fried to being turned into an adobo special. While those balut dishes are certainly delectable, nothing beats eating it in its most humble versionâ€”just boiled with a sprinkle of salt or a splash of vinegar with chili.
