My birthday celebrations before the pandemic were usually out of the country because I would really give myself a break on my special day. (pinag-iipunan ko talaga yun!) But last June 8, (yan birthday ko!) was just like last year, no travel. (siyempre kasalanan ng pandemya!) I am just grateful that I was able to celebrate a new chapter of life, especially in this time of crisis. Thank you to family and friends who made it really special. (walang party party pero puno ng pagmamahal!)

Days before my birthday, I recalled some funny and interesting birthday scenes in showbiz. (na yung iba na-experience ko kahit di naman ako artista!)

One common tradition on television shows is the surprise birthday video greetings for the celebrator. (as in gulat na gulat sya, kahit naman expected na batiin sya nun kasi friends nya yun!) I had this birthday celebration on one of my talk shows. The staff produced that kind of video. I was almost teary eyed to see friends greeting me (in fairness nakaka-touch din naman talaga mga message ng friends!) when all of a sudden there was this actress who appeared and greeted me. (parang umurong luha ko!) I was just wondering why she was part of the line-up because we were never close to each other. (well… hi hello lang ganyan!) Apparently, the segment producer who interviewed her thought we were friends.  (ang bait lang ni actress kasi nagpanggap sya talagang close kami sa pagbibigay niya ng message!)

Members of the family are usually part of the VTR.  (siyempre bongga 'yan kasi maiiyak ang celeb. Pampataas ng ratings! Chos!) But I have informed my family not to grant interviews for my surprise videos (or else, ititigil ko ang sustento nila!) I am just not comfortable seeing them on cam, giving me good words. (alam ko nang love nila ako! baka kasi mauwi pa sa kadaramahan!)

Production staff can also interview the celebrity’s idol or mentor. In one of my birthday shows on my radio show, multi-awarded broadcaster Jessica Soho surprised me with her singing voice. (i-KMJS na yan!)

(biglang sumingit si Jessica sa show, kumakanta ng happy birthday..)

JS: (after kumanta..) o ayan MR.FU, kumanta ako kahit hindi ako naghuhugas ng kamay. (may campaign kasi noon ang DOH na dapat kasing haba ng kanta ng happy birthday ang paghuhugas ng kamay)

MF: Sino ’to?! (yung may pagkabarubal pa ang pagtatanong ko tapos may bumulong sakin sa radio booth na si Ms. Jessica pala!) OOOOOOHHHH MMMYYY GOD! Ma’am Jessica Soho!!!! (ganyan ka taas yung reaction ko!)

I will never forget Ms. Jessica because she was the very first host who featured me on television when I was starting as a radio jock.  I eventually get invited to guest on her show every now and then. (feeling close ako !)

Manny V. Pangilinan

In one of my TV5 stints, I had this segment where I do ambush interviews of celebrities.  I remember seeing our boss Manny V. Pangilinan at the red carpet of an event. I approached him and politely asked questions.  But before I ended the interview, I asked one big favor. (kapal din fez ko e!)

MF: Thank you sir MVP! Pero sir, puwede po ba ako huminggi ng favor?

MVP: Ano yun Mr.FU?

MF:  Malapit na po kasi ang birthday ko. Baka pwede po batiin n'yo po ako ng happy  birthday, tapos e-ere po yun sa show. Kunwari po magugulat ako.

MVP: (natatawa..) No problem. Sige. Happy Birthday Mr. FU! Sana happy ka sa happy network. Stay with us!

The show decided to air this portion with no cuts. (as in as it is! nakakaloka trip ko di ba?!)

Birthdays will always be a blessing. Celebrate each birthday with love and gratitude. (di kailangang may pa-piging lagi!) Thank the Creator, thank the universe for the new life, new hope. (lakas maka inspirational keme ha!) Love and light to all of us! (tapos segue sa mga mahaharbat na gifts! Chos!)
