DepEd allows private schools, other public schools to start new school year early

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday, June 25, announced that private schools and non-DepEd public schools are allowed to start their respective school openings as soon as they are ready - provided that there will be no face-to-face classes.

In an advisory posted in DepEd’s official Facebook page, DepEd said that private schools and other public schools that are not under the agency may start the SY 2021-2022 provided that these schools use alternative learning delivery modalities for their students.

Pending the approval of the new general school opening and school calendar, DepEd said that “private schools and non-DepEd public schools may already start their classes for SY 2021-2022 provided there are no face-to-face classes and the school will be implementing only distance learning modalities.”

DepEd also reminded that private schools and non-DepEd public schools that intend to start classes “ahead of the general school opening” will be required to submit relevant documents to the DepEd Regional Directors in their respective areas.

This, DepEd said, is pursuant to DepEd Order No. 13 series of 2020 and DepEd Order No. 17 series of 2020 which contain readiness assessment.

President Duterte, in a televised briefing on June 21, once again rejected the proposal of DepEd to hold limited face-to-face classes in low risk areas.

Following the President’s decision, Briones formally withdrew the request of DepEd for the President to allow the pilot implementation of face-to-face classes, especially this upcoming school year.

In a statement issued June 23, DepEd said following Duterte’s decision to postpone limited face-to-face classes in basic education, the agency will continue to implement “enhanced” blended learning” as it prepares for the opening of the upcoming school year.

DepEd, however, noted that there is no school opening date yet. The department added that it will release the final school calendar for SY 2021-2022 “once we get the final approval” of the President.

The DepEd is proposing three dates for the possible school opening date for the upcoming school year: Aug. 23, 2021, Sept. 6, 2021, or Sept. 13, 2021.
