DepEd reviews 'congested' K to 12 curriculum

Recognizing the need to decongest the current curriculum, the Department of Education (DepEd) is currently reviewing the K to 12 curriculum for basic education.

Citing initial results of the K to 12 review, DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado San Antonio, in a virtual press briefing this week, said that the curriculum review “has actually showed that our curriculum standards, performance and context standards are comparable with that standards of any other country around the world.”

However, San Antonio said that DepEd also discovered that the curriculum - especially the intended one - is “really congested” and it “really demands that we decongest the curriculum we pay attention to most essential competencies.”

San Antonio said during the curriculum review, DepEd also found out that there is a “good vertical alignment and articulation” of the curriculum.

“This means that the competencies that we have identified for the different grade levels for the different learning areas are fine we need to also make sure that there is this so-called ‘horizontal alignment’ of the competencies,” he explained.

Having “horizontal alignment” in the curriculum, San Antonio said, would enable certain lessons being covered in a specific subject to be relevant to lessons in other subjects or learning areas.

“This will also allow us to be able to introduce cross-curricular integrative assessment which will be a lot less burdensome for the learners,” San Antonio said.

If DepEd is able to do this, San Antonio said that “the learners will work on one performance task for the whole learning area instead of the preparing a performance task for every subject for them to get their grades.”

In April, DepEd said that it has set a roadmap for the review and updating of curriculum for Kinder to Grade 10 in order to adapt to new approaches in teaching and learning.
