WTFu (What the FU) by MR. FU: The Miss World PH candidate from Congress

Joy Barcoma had to start working at a very young age to send herself to school. She was 15 years old when she tried modeling.  At 17, she joined several beauty contests. But one of her most unforgettable opportunities was her on-the-job training at broadcaster Raffy Tulfo’s production.

Aside from learning important broadcasting tools from the controversial radio host, she also got the trust and support  of Raffy’s radio partner, Nina Taduran. (na kongresista na ngayon ha!) Cong. Nina opened a lot of doors to her. (ay pwede makidaan sa isang pinto!)

“Malaki po talaga naitulong sakin ni Cong. Nina. Sa simula palang na OJT ako. Siya talaga yung nagtuturo sakin at sumusuporta lalo na nung time na yun kasi working student po ako,” Joy recalls.  (penge rin po ng suporta Cong!)

After graduating from the Broadcast Communications Department of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Joy landed a job as Cong. Nina’s executive assistant. Cong. Nina noticed Joy’s potentials not only in public service but also in beauty pageants.  She encouraged her to join Miss World Philippines. (ay bakit ako di naisip ni Cong pasalihin?!)

Cong. Nina narrates: “Noon talaga napansin ko mahiyain sya. Tapos nakasalamin. Parang Betty La Fea. Pero nakita ko mukha niya, sabi ko ang ganda-ganda mo. Sabi pa niya, hindi naman po. Tapos nung nagkaroon kami ng pageant na Miss Philippine Islands, pinasali ko sya. Nanalo sya. Ngayon naman, may panibago siyang hamon sa Miss World Philippines.“ (pwede ko bang hamunin yang si ate?!)

The 22-year-old candidate is currently busy preparing for the pageant’s coronation night on July, 25. (naka-ready na rin ako girl!)

“Mostly na preparation is yung usual na walk, Q and A, personality development but what I invest most of my time is mentally preparing myself kasi po mahirap ang pressure. So, ayaw ko maapektuhan sa mga negative comments and opinions,“ Joy explains. (block mo sila ‘day!)

Joy always carries with her the advices of her mentor. “Inspirasyon ko po talaga si Cong. Nina. Hindi po sya nakakalimot sa pinagsimulan nya. Mula sa pagiging media practitioner niya hanggang sa maging congresswoman, tapos yung puso nasa serbisyo publiko. Yun po instill ko sa sarili ko na di ko kakalimutan yung mga taong nakatulong sakin kung saan man ako ngayon at magpasalamat sa suporta nila.” (parang bet ko rin maging congresswoman!)

Pageant insiders say beauty pageant candidates can get indecent proposals from rich men. How will Joy handle this? “Hindi na po bago sakin yung mga ganyan. Kung may mag-offer ulit, tatanggihan ko po pa rin kasi vina-value ko po ang dignidad.  Hindi naman ako against sa mga nakikipag-date sa mas matanda sa kanila, ang hindi lang ako sang-ayon ay makasira ng pamilya. Ang respeto ko po ay nasa asawa, sa pamilya. Galing po kasi ako sa broken family kaya ayaw ko maging dahilan para makasira ng pamilya at kinabukasan ng anak. “ (parang need ko ata ng dignidad!)

Her heart is open for the entertainment industry, especially now that beauty queens are always welcome in showbiz. But for now, she wants to focus on her career in the beauty pageant circle. (ay ako kaya ko pagsabayin pagiging actress at beauty queen!)

“Kapag nanalo po ako, tutulong pa rin ako kay Cong. Nina, kasi napakalaking suporta ang naibibigay nya sakin pati ng mga kasama ko sa trabaho.  Kasama ko pa rin sila dahil mayroon akong mga plataporma tulad ng mental health literacy. Hindi naman ako mababago ng korona, mas mapapalawak lang nito yung pagtulong at pag-inspire ng mas maraming tao," Joy says.  (pahiram ng korona ha!)
