Edward Kelly's victory shows Team Lakay's improved ground game, says Sangiao

Team Lakay coach Mark Sangiao believes that Edward Kelly's recent victory in ONE Championship was a testament to the Benguet stable's improved ground game.

Kelly survived a triangle submission scare from Egyptian foe Ahmed Faress as the Team Lakay stalwart was seen with little to no room for escape.

Catching his breath, the 36-year-old Kelly escaped and slid out of the deep triangle choke, thanks to his knee support that created a little space to avoid the submission.

"Masasabi lang natin dito sa part ng Team Lakay, makikita natin yung improvement nila sa ground, wrestling at doon sa submission (On Team Lakay's end, we can see their improvement on ground game, wrestling, and submission)," said Sangiao in a Youtube video posted Monday, May 31.

"Pinilit din ni Edward na mag-attempt sana pero siyempre 'yon 'yong field ni Ahmed Faress kaya mahirap. Hindi na-execute ni Edward Kelly 'yung kanyang submission (Edward also attempted but of course, that's Ahmed Faress' field that's why it was difficult. Edward Kelly wasn't able to execute his submission)."

Kelly finally barged into the winning column and improved to a 13-8 record while Faress fell to a 16-4 slate.

Sangiao added that Kelly's win is also a great momentum provider for Team Lakay since veteran Eduard Folayang suffered defeat at the hands of rival Shinya Aoki last month.

Prior to Folayang's defeat, ONE Championship rookie Jenelyn Olsim submitted Brazilian Maira Mazar last March with a tight guillotine choke from standing position.

"Magandang result na naman 'to para sa Team Lakay. Nakabalik tayo sa pagkamalo," said the 42-year-old Sangiao.
