Sangiao keeps fingers crossed for sweep on US prime time fights

Team Lakay coach Mark Sangiao is keeping his fingers crossed for a potential sweep as three Igorot warriors are set to step in the Circle in ONE on TNT series this month.

Lito Adiwang will be the first one to go against world No. 1 strawweight Jarred Brooks on April 14 while Stephen Loman and Eduard Folayang will follow suit against former UFC veterans John Lineker and Yoshihiro Akiyama, respectively, on April 28 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

"Praying for 3-0. Hindi naman tayo maging biased at greedy, pero sana tatlong panalo (We are not biased and greedy but I hope we get three wins)," said the 42-year-old Sangiao.

The Team Lakay coach admitted that their schedule has been hectic nowadays, conducting training twice a day in preparation for the huge fights set to air live on US prime time.

With back-to-back wins from Adiwang and women's strawweight rookie Jenelyn Olsim, Sangiao said his stalwarts have gained extra motivation, hoping that they could sustain the momentum.

"Tingin ko isa itong magandang senyales na nakapaghanda din nang husto ang team so ngayon nag-start kami (I think this is a good sign that the team has been well-prepared from the beginning)," added Sangiao. "Last year, kita natin medyo pangit, pero nakapag-adjust ulit tayo. Mas maganda 'yung mga preparations sa ngayon (Last year's results were quite unpleasant but we have adjusted now. Our preparation is better)."

It would be recalled that Team Lakay was not as unfortunate in late 2020 which saw Folayang, Adiwang and Kevin Belingon fall to their respective opponents.

Folayang suffered defeat at the hands of Aussie foe Antonio Caruso, Adiwang had a controversial split decision loss over Hiroba Minowa of Japan and Belingon was knocked out by Lineker.

Loman earlier expressed his desire for payback on behalf of senior Belingon when he takes on the Brazilian "Hands of Stone" in his ONE Championship debut.

At the end of the day, Sangiao wanted to end the month of April on a high note, "Pag-pray natin 'yung mga kababayan natin so that we’ll see a very happy ending of April. Syempre especially ngayon na pumasok na worldwide ang ONE Championship (Let's pray for our compatriots so that we'll see a very happy ending of April especially that ONE Championship is going global)."
