VisMin Cup spares two Siquijor players from hefty punishment

The Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup spared two players of the Siquijor Mystics from any involvement in the controversial game against the ARQ Builders-Lapu-Lapu City Heroes last Wednesday.

Miguel Castellano and Michael Sereno will no longer be part of a group of Siquijor players and coaches who were banned by the league as they were not in uniform during the infamous match that rocked the upstart regional league.

Chief Operations Officer Rocky Chan said that Castellano was staying in the team’s hotel due to a sore right knee while Sereno left the bubble in Alcantara, Cebu prior to the start of the Visayas leg for “personal reasons.”

Chan added that the case of a third Siquijor player, Vincent Tangcay, is being reviewed since he didn’t play a single second during the match that was stopped at halftime due to “power interruption.”

"We are also reviewing the other players in the game," Chan said.

Siquijor was expelled from the league after several players made apparent attempts to deliberately miss their free throws and layups.

Lapu-Lapu, which had some of its players and coaches slapped with fines and suspensions for the same reasons, claimed that Siquijor had no interest in making the game competitive.

Additional sanctions are being finalized by the Games and Amusements Board, which granted the new league professional status, while the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has launched its own investigation.
