PBA chairman and TNT Tropang Giga governor Ricky Vargas said Sunday that he plans to discuss the issue concerning controversial player Ray Parks Jr. during the two-day planning session of the league in preparation for the 46th Season tentatively set next month.

Vargas said that it is in the interest of the league to clarify things since TNT holds the rights of Parks even after his one-year contract expired. The league has plans to look into players' contracts particularly this COVID-19 period.

“Matters like this will be taken up. Because of the pandemic, we’re trying to address everything,” Vargas told the media after the PBA Press Corps virtual awards night at TV5 office in Mandaluyong City.

“We’ll take a look at it from two points of view… this is not the first time this incident happened. We’ll see how we can address this issue so that moving forward the policies are a lot clearer and fairer to everyone concerned.”

Vargas was the recipient of the PBA Press Corps Danny Floro Executive of the Year for 2019, while commissioner Willie Marcial was awarded with the Mr. Executive in the 2020 Bubble Awards.

Parks, an incoming third year player, is in the middle of another controversy following his social media post that he is sitting out the coming PBA season due to "personal reasons."

Parks apparently asked permission from TNT top management that he is flying to Los Angeles.

However, no less than team owner Manny V. Pangilinan posted on his official Facebook account a photo of the former national team player in La Union with national surfer Roger Casugay.

Vargas said he reached out to Parks – son of the late PBA seven-time Best Import Bobby Parks – to clarify things.

“I said to him ‘let’s talk, I sent you a private message.’ He hasn’t called back, “I reached out to him, I wanted to talk to him, but he has not replied,” Vargas said.

“He’s such a very high potential player that if he wants to be a real winner, he has to look at himself very carefully.”

Regardless of what Parks wants, or plans, if this includes playing abroad, Vargas said the right remains with TNT.

“I think that’s the rule, he’s still with us,” he said.

“If he does decide to take an offer overseas, he has to get the permission of SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) because I think FIBA will have to clear it with SBP, and it’s normal and customary that the SBP clears it with the PBA and the commissioner will normally clear it with the team.”

“That’s the process, that stays until it is changed,” Vargas added.
