Eight teams set to battle it out in PH leg of the Wild Rift Icon Series: Preseason

Riot Games unveiled on Monday, February 22, the eight teams invited to compete in the Philippine leg of the inaugural League of Legends: Wild Rift Southeast Asia Icon Series: Preseason. 

Wild Rift Asia Brawl champion Smart Omega and runner-up Nexplay Esports were added to the initial list of invitees in the preseason tourney that seeks to serve as a launch pad for Riot's mobile MOBA game to flourish in the region. 

Earlier this month, Riot extended its invitation to Bren Esports, Team Secret PH and Rex Regum Qeon (RRQ) PH to play in the warm-up tilt set on March 20 and 21. 

Team Secret, a renowned multi-national esports organization, and RRQ, an Indonesia-based group, both decided to build their Wild Rift teams in the country. 

Completing the cast of the contenders for the PH preseason championship are Liyab Esports, Execration and Sunsparks, which is looking to rebuild its franchise. 

Sunsparks is most notably known for its success in Moonton's Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, winning back-to-back titles in the MPL Philippines Seasons 4 and 5 before it was acquired by Indonesian organization Aura. 

"The Southeast Asia Icon Series is our first step to grow League of Legends: Wild Rift into a regional esport worthy of our players' passion and skills," said Chris Tran, head of esports for Riot Games Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. 

"We hope that teams and fans alike will enjoy this tailored experience of high stakes Wild Rift competition," added Tran. 

After the preseason, players across the region will get to compete in the Icon Series: Summer Season, an eight week-long competition.  

Apart from the Icon Series, Riot also partnered with Mineski Philippines, Globe and Oppo to run the two major local Wild Rift tournaments which stake a total of P10 million. 

Through its Philippine Pro Gaming League (PPGL), Mineski will hold the massive tilts divided into two seasons--the Summer Split from April to June and the Spring Split from July to September.
