‘Squid Game’ nominated at 27th Critics Choice Awards

The Korean drama “Squid Game,” Netflix’s biggest series of all-time, has bagged three nominations at the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards, which will be held on Jan. 9.

“Squid Game” is nominated for best drama series and best foreign language series, while its lead star, Lee Jung-jae, is nominated for best actor in a drama series.

"Squid Game" is up for best drama series and Lee Jung-jae for best actor in a drama series at the 27th Critics Choice Awards (Netflix)

For best drama series, “Squid Game” is going up against “Evil,” “For All Mankind,” “The Good Fight, “Pose,” “Succession,” “This Is Us” and “Yellowjackets.”

The nominees for best actor in a drama series are Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”), Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”), Mike Colter (“Evil”), “Brian Cox (“Succession”), Billy Porter (“Pose” and Jeremy Strong (“Succession”).

“Squid Game” won Breakthrough Series-Long Format (over 40 minutes) award at the 31st Annual Gotham Awards held on Nov. 29 in New York City.

For best foreign language series, the nominees are “Acapulco” (Apple TV+), “Call My Agent!” (Netflix), “Lupin” (Netflix), “Money Heist” (Netflix), “Narcos: Mexico” (Netflix) and “Squid Game” (Netflix).

By company, HBO has 20 nominations followed by Netflix with 18, Hulu with 11, and Apple TV+, HBO Max and Paramount with nine each.

“Although the industry is still recovering from the COVID-19 lockdown, you wouldn’t know it from the wealth of amazing television programs our nomination committees pored through to come up with this year’s nominees,” said Critics Choice Association TV Branch president Ed Martin.

The nominees in the film category will be announced on Dec. 13.
