DepEd eyes issuance of 'safety seal' to schools for the expansion phase of pilot face-to-face classes

To indicate the readiness of schools to resume face-to-face classes, the Department of Education (DepEd) is planning to issue a “safety seal” to those that have passed the assessment and evaluation done in coordination with the Department of Health (DOH).

DepEd Planning Service Director Roger Masapol, in a virtual press briefing on Tuesday, Nov. 9, said that the agency has “met with DTI yesterday on the mechanism for the conferment of Safety Seal.”

Masapol noted that once DepEd has been authorized to issue safety seals, these will be given first to the 100 public schools that will participate in the pilot study of limited face-to-face classes that will start on Nov. 15.

A safety seal, Masapol said, would also indicate the readiness of the school to participate in expansion of limited face-to-face person classes.

Based on the timeline issued by DepEd, the pilot study will run for two months or from November 2021 to January 2022.

After the evaluation of the pilot implementation, DepEd will present to President Duterte the findings of the study on limited face-to-face classes. Based on the report, DepEd plans to push through with the proposed expansion to start on March 7, 2022.

However, Masapol clarified that schools given the “safety seal” cannot implement limited face-to-face classes immediately. These schools still have to pass the evaluation of the DOH as well as the local DepEd offices.

“Iyong pagbibigay ng safety seal ay gagawin natin ito para ipakita na ang school natin, kahit 'di pa sila magpa-pilot, ay ready na sa next phase --- iyong expansion (We will give a safety seal to schools to show that even if they are not included in pilot run, they are ready for the next phase --- which is the expansion),” Masapol said.

Safety seals are issued by DTI for businesses to assure their customers that these establishments are compliant with the minimum health standards issued by the government amidst the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation in the country.
